Lip frenulum is attached between the front teeth in the upper maxillary and affects the appearance of the gap between the front teeth.

When cuspids erupt, at about 11-12 years of age, the space between front teeth should close, but in some cases the upper lip frenulum does not move naturally upwards and remain between the front teeth forming a diastema – the space between the front teeth.

Short frenulum of the lip is observed:

  • Lifting the child’s upper lip;
  • When milk teeth start to grow.

If one parent has a space between the front teeth and does not want their child to have diastema, they can perform the lip frenectomy when the child is 8-9 years old, but in other cases, in such age it is advisable to refrain from surgery.

Short frenulum of the lip is treated surgically. This procedure can be performed only by a trained dentist or oral surgeon. The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, so the patient does not feel any pain. In most cases it is not a complicated procedure, it is enough just to cut a short frenulum.

After the lip frenulum surgery:

  • Swelling and discomfort may last for several days.
  • Treatment with analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Good oral hygiene.
  • Follow-up and removal of sutures after one week.

Smile is a modern man’s business card, so that from the first days one has to take care of teeth.
